Q&A With Our Director, Stacey Wilson

This month marks ten years since Stacey Wilson joined VMH – initially as Associate and now as Director – an opportune moment to find out a little bit more about her…

Did you always want to become involved in the legal profession?

Since I was young, I told people I wanted to be a lawyer when I was older. I must have read about it in a book or seen it on a tv show and thought it would be a good idea. I don’t think I had any idea what it meant but it stuck with me and that was what I worked towards all through my schooling.

What was your route into the role?

I completed my Diploma in Legal Practice at Edinburgh University in 2010. I then completed my traineeship at a new property firm in Edinburgh. In 2015, a friend recommended I speak with the Partners at VMH who were looking for a solicitor and the rest, as they say, is history. Ten years later and I am proud to own part of a successful, well established Edinburgh law firm.

What makes a good legal professional?

Being a problem solver. You must be honest and confident with your advice, and you also need to be organised.

What are the best parts and the biggest challenges of your job?

The best thing about my job is helping clients move into their new home. Being able to offer advice to allow clients to get to where they want to be is rewarding. The biggest challenge is the ever-changing landscape of the Edinburgh property market. There needs to be enough stock to keep people moving (and fewer chains would be nice!).

Who inspires you and why?

I am inspired by lots of different people every day. I am lucky to know and work with inspiring people who work incredibly hard to achieve their goals whether that be in business or in life. Law and Property can be tough at times and having lots of supportive people in my life has given me the confidence and encouragement to reach for my goals. This has driven me to be a better lawyer, colleague, and friend.

What would you say to encourage a young person to take up a career in law?

I would say go for it. Law is varied and there are many different areas of law to work in. The opportunities available are endless. Also, get some experience, do a summer placement or a week’s work experience in a local firm if you can. It is never too early to build connections.

What are your interests or hobbies outside work?

I enjoy family time. I also love cold water swimming and paddle boarding. I spend most of my free time swimming and walking my 2 cockapoos Hamish & Molly!

Have you got a hidden talent/something people might not know about you?

I can still do a cartwheel – as challenged by my niece.
